Meet the Vet

Dr. Nickens

Dr. Brittani Nickens was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. Her love for animals was apparent as a young child. At the early age of five, her destiny was already set and she was determined to be a veterinarian. To achieve that goal, Dr. Nickens attended Penn State University (State College) where she earned a B.S. degree in Animal BioScience. Following graduation, she was accepted to Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she graduated magna cum laude with a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine. She continued her training at Garden State Veterinary Specialists in New Jersey, where she completed a small animal medicine/surgery rotating internship. Dr. Nickens also worked as a relief veterinarian in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada to work in general/emergency medicine. While working as an associate in Las Vegas, Dr. Nickens performed house calls, which is when she developed a love and passion for providing individualized and compassionate care for her patients in their home or other familiar settings.

In 2017, Dr. Nickens and her family moved to Alexandria, Virginia, where she continued to work in general practice and at local shelters. While working in Northern Virginia and the surrounding areas, Dr. Nickens saw a need for a mobile/house call veterinary service, given the high volume of pets adopted from local shelters and rescue groups. Based on that belief, Dr. Nickens started Doorstep Veterinary Care, in the hopes of meeting the needs of, and adding to the unique tapestry of the community.

In addition to being a veterinarian, Dr. Nickens is married to her wonderful and supportive husband William. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, dining out, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. She is also an avid outdoors person, who enjoys playing basketball, tennis, and riding her bicycle.
